Much like bad weather tore through the north-west the prior day, Manchester City swept United aside at the Etihad. It was a statement three goal triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side thanks to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their championship potential as they strengthened their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Consecutive Losses for Manchester United

This scoreline represented back-to-back Women's Super League setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since last May, putting them seven points off the top team with their title hopes in serious doubt.

Manchester United's capacity to manage domestic and continental football with a small team has been a frequently analyzed topic since they secured entry to the UCL. Looking at the calendar, it always seemed this was the period that would fully examine this fortitude. Unfortunately for the opposition, they looked fatigued throughout, the memorable win against the French side clearly having had an impact.

Lineup Adjustments

Skinner had sought to freshen things up with a several alterations. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all added freshness, although the exclusion of the in-form Malard to the bench was questioned.

City, in comparison, have no similar fitness issues. Jeglertz made one change from the previous win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from a physical setback.

Overpowering Start

The trouble started to gather for Skinner and his squad from the first whistle. This was a demonstration of the power from City whose dynamic forward line played with and dismantled the opposition with a superb opening period showing that saw them net a trio in 21 minutes.

This put the hosts firmly in control and saw the visitors all at sea. Prior to this encounter, the away side had let in just a handful in this league campaign but they collapsed in the wake of Manchester City's attacking flair.

Opening Threats

The early indicators came quickly when Miedema used her power to muscle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot off target. Lauren Hemp was at the core of everything in the beginning, exploiting the space left by Riviere down United’s right flank. Her deliveries were causing problems and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg cleared off the line.

United had several sorties forwards, their long-ball tactic giving them options in the flanks but they could not test the City goalkeeper. City, meanwhile, dominated the ball, taunting their opposition and trying to draw them out of their structure.

Goals Galore

They converted their dominance with almost the first period played when Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A ball to the back post was headed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to nod home. It was City’s 7th header of the campaign.

They increased their lead with an additional two goals just before the half-time. When Rose was permitted to drive through the middle from central defence, the play became spacious for the hosts. The influential Casparij received possession on the right side before delivering a accurate low cross for Bunny Shaw to force home. Shortly later, they had a third after a quick change in possession saw Lauren Hemp allowed the room to drive a shot home from distance.

Final Period

The clearest adjustment came from the United manager at the half-time as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was futile to alter the outcome of the game. Ex- Manchester City player Park came closest, hitting the upright, but the visitors were offensively poor and did not manage to produce a solitary shot on goal.

The hosts, in contrast, could have added to their lead when a superb Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the hosts. After failing to overcome any side who ended above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have victories against the Gunners and United to put them in a favorable standing after nine games.
